Grim Horizons: Tales of Dark Fiction
Grim Horizons: Tales of Dark Fiction
In 1986, an investment manager hosts a holiday party for his rich clients, a business pitch on his mind and a monstrous problem in his basement.
In 2091, a pilot trains his onboard A.I. in human nuance with shattering results.
Far in the forgotten past, at the edge of the new world, a storyteller discovers an inn with an odd price: three tales from his life.
Today, in the scalding southwestern desert, a father flees with his child as a demon turns her eyes toward them.
Grim Horizons: Tales of Dark Fiction is a cerebral collection, seven stories that blend fantasy, horror, and futuristic fiction. Taken one by one, or as a feast altogether, these dark tales are a treat for the twisted mind.
Wow, this was such an awesome title, that while I was in the middle of it, I picked up every other title I could find by this author on Amazon! There's not one boring story in this book, and I was thinking about each tale, and talking about them with my wife afterwards.
Spent quite a lot of time whispering "Oh, God, no," while reading this book. Whenever I realized where a story was going, I got chills. Excellent.
This was a wonderful look at the author’s thinking and writing his earliest stories! I have already read his recent works and have added him to my favorites! This series of short stories shows that , even back then, he was a great writer!
Mr. Van Wey does not disappoint with these stories. His books flow with an uncanny ease, and these tales are no exception.ENJOY!12/20/86 .. good old-fashioned weirdness with a punch in the gut ending.A Feast of Infinite Rot - one of the best titles EVER! Adored the tales-within-a-tale and the keen observations on self-delusion.Learning to Fly - frighteningly creepy. How can one not get flashes of HAL 9000 while reading this? All I can say is this AI crapola coming down the road is not good for humanity and things are going to go haywire… I don’t care how much assurance the supposed smart ones shovel our way.Debt of Bacon - a crazy tale of cyclically carnivorous creatures … … oh, yeah… and man’s inherent tendency to destroy anything we touchYou Are Not a Metaphor - good stuff! A demonic road chase.A Brief Treatise on Market Ecologies - a different take on society’s endless attempts to be unique by doing the same things as everyone else, getting caught up in the need for affirmation, and ultimately failing.Let Is Build a Haunted House - a haunting as seen through rapid passages of time and from the ghosts POV.
I really liked these stories, and how he connected them so cleverly.I will continue to read his books.Thank you, Andrew
